My Teaching Philosophy

First and Foremost...

As a pedagogue it is my responsibility to impart skills, knowledge and advice to assist each student in achieving their goals. Just as every voice is individual, each student is individual and therefore my pedagogy is tailored to fit each students’ individual needs. It is also my job to provide an inviting, comfortable and safe learning environment to assist students in achieving their highest potential and finding their authentic voice.

Skills

My vocal pedagogy is heavily derived from bel canto, the Italian school of singing, along with a functional understanding of the singing instrument. I truly believe that this is the most healthy and versatile way of singing any genre of music. Through the use of vocal practices centred around strengthening the three fundamental pillars of vocal technique, the student will learn to sing with ease, comfort, and control. Ultimately leading to a singing voice which is authentically  their own.

Three Fundamental Pillars of Vocal Technique:

  • Breath Management
  • Balance
  • Resonance

Teaching the skill of performing is a central part of my pedagogy. Performing can be a learned skill but can only be trained through practice. I provide my students with opportunities to perform in order to help them hone their performance skills. This includes anything from learning how to tackle nerves, to performing with a mic.

Knowledge

Imparting practical knowledge such as how the instrument functions is s part of my job as a vocal instructor. Instrumentalists know their instrument inside and out, why should the voice be any different? If the student gains an understanding of the functionality of their instrument, it  will ultimately effect how they choose to perform a piece of music and influence their knowledge of technique and style.

I also aim to inform and advise students of  proper maintenance of their instrument both physically and mentally.  The singing voice is part of the body, and as a whole, it requires maintenance just like a piano or a guitar.

Finally, imparting knowledge about music history, music theory, style, and aesthetic  is part of my teaching philosophy no matter what genre they choose to study.

Advice

I also offer advice about career aspirations or furthering education. I will always provide students with information about opportunities I believe they will benefit from such as performance opportunities, auditions, masterclasses, or competitions.

Safe Space

My studio is a safe space for all individuals. My hope is that everyone will  feel comfortable, included and valued. I aim to foster creativity and self-expression while helping build students confidence and self-assurance.
